Celebrity chef Curtis Stone reveals the secret recipe to make French toast

French toasts are a classically delicious breakfast dish.

And to add sweetness to your weekend, Australian celebrity chef Curtis Stone has revealed the secret to making the perfect French toast every time.

Here, the ambassador of Coles supermarket giant shared his surprisingly easy recipe – and the best type of bread to use.

What you need to make French toast

  • Brioche
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Butter
  • Sugar and cinnamon
  • Serve with ricotta and poached strawberries

‘First off, you need to start with the right bread. So I’ve got a beautiful brioche loaf here. You want a nice soft bread, brioche is made with lots of eggs and little butter,’ he said in a YouTube video.

To make the french toast, cut thick slices of bread. Curtis said another alternative to use was raisin toast.

In a large rectangular dish, whisk the eggs and milk together.

‘You soak the bread [in the mixture] for a couple of minutes,’ Curtis said, suggesting to turn the bread over and let the mixture soak through.

‘Just let it absorb the beautiful mixture of the egg and milk.’

On warm heat, add the butter to the pan.

‘We’re cooking with butter because it’s got such a beautiful flavour, especially for French toast,’ he said.

‘Gently pick up your brioche, pop it into the pan. While that’s cooking, and all you’re looking for really is get some nice golden colour on both sides.

‘You want it to be nice and crisp on the outside, beautiful and sort of silken on the inside. Once you’ve got that golden colour on both sides of your French toast, you’re ready to go.’

In a different bowl, Curtis mixes cinnamon and sugar together.

‘We’re actually going to take our French toast out of the pan, drop it into the cinnamon and sugar, toss it before we serve it,’ he said.

‘It’s a beautiful way to incorporate little spice and sweetness. And also give that extra texture on the outside of your French toast.’

‘Now that is not a bad start to a beautiful weekend. French toast – so easy to make, but so so delicious,’ Curtis said.
