Celtic to host KR Reykjavik in first 2020-21 Champions League qualifier…. BEFORE the 2019-20 final

Celtic will host Iceland’s KR Reykjavik in first qualifying round of 2020-21 Champions League…. with Neil Lennon’s side starting BEFORE the 2019-20 final has been played!

  • Celtic will host KR Reykjavik in the Champions League first qualifying round
  • Neil Lennon’s side need to win four matches to reach the group stages
  • The 2020-21 qualifying rounds will take place before the 2019-20 final is played
  • Last season’s Champions League was delayed due to the coronavirus crisis

Celtic will play at home to Icelandic club KR Reykjavik in the first round of Champions League qualifying.

The tie will take place over one leg because of the competition’s revised schedule due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Celtic Park will likely host the game on August 18 or 19, but there is still a possibility the fixture could be staged at a neutral venue. Neil Lennon’s Scottish champions face up to four qualifying rounds in total.

The qualifying rounds for the 2020-21 Champions League are taking place before the 2019-20 campaign has finished.

Europe’s best teams are currently competing at the quarter-final stage of the unfinished season, which was halted due to the global pandemic.

The tournament is set to embark in a World Cup-style format, with ties being played over one-leg in a neutral venue in Portugal, with the final taking place on August 23.

The Europa League, which English sides Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are competing for, is also following a similar format in Germany.

Celtic’s only previous meeting with KR Reykjavik came in a Champions League qualifying tie in the 2014-15 season when they progressed 5-0 on aggregate.

Meanwhile, Irish champions Dundalk have been drawn away to Slovenian side Celje.

UEFA will conduct the draw for the second qualifying round on Monday, with those matches scheduled to be played on August 25 or 26.
