 A woman is fighting for her life after a stabbing at Centrelink Airport West in Melbourne.

The 55-year-old woman was attacked at the business on Louis Street at about 1.30pm on Tuesday. 

The woman sustained suspected stab wounds and was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A 3WA listener said she was coming out of the shopping centre’s food court entrance and saw people crowding around the bus stop outside the shopping centre. 

‘As I was walking out of the shopping centre I overheard some people saying “oh, golly gosh, that’s not good”,’ Sarah said.  

‘Everyone was looking over to a certain area where the bus stops are.’

The concerned resident said she was almost ‘bowled over’ by a police car as she was heading to her car. 

At the time, Sarah observed two police vehicles and no ambulance or paramedics on the scene. 

A 34-year-old man from Essendon was arrested and is assisting police with their investigation. 

‘A crime scene has been set up while police work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,’ Victoria Police said.
