Cesc Fabregas reveals he was in talks with AC Milan AND Napoli before opting to sign for Monaco as Spaniard admits he ‘was close to three or four clubs’ before leaving Chelsea

Cesc Fabregas has revealed that he could have joined AC Milan or Napoli instead of Monaco.

The midfielder made the switch to Monaco from Chelsea in January 2019.

However, Fabregas disclosed that he held discussions with Carlo Ancelotti when he was in charge of Napoli while he also spoke to AC Milan chief executive Ivan Gazidis, who he knew from his time at Arsenal.

As reported by Tuttosport, Fabregas said: ‘I was close to three or four clubs before I joined Monaco. I spoke to [Carlo] Ancelotti when he was at Napoli and with [Ivan] Gazidis when he moved to Milan. In the end I opted to join Monaco.’ 

Fabregas has found himself in and out of the starting lineup at Monaco, which is perhaps to be expected given that he is now in the latter stages of his career.

However, the 33-year-old is still capable of producing some impressive performances – he scored and provided an assist in Monaco’s 3-2 victory against Paris Saint-Germain last month.

In addition, Fabregas set up a goal for Pietro Pellegri as Monaco were beaten by Lille on Sunday.

Fabregas’ current contract at Monaco is set to run until the summer of 2022.

Having joined Arsenal as a youngster from Barcelona, Fabregas went on to make over 300 appearances for the Gunners prior to returning to the Nou Camp.

He won an array of trophies with Barcelona and did likewise with Chelsea after joining the Blues in 2014.
