Chadwick Boseman to receive posthumous actor tribute at Gotham Awards alongside Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom co-star Viola Davis
Chadwick Boseman is getting the annual actor tribute posthumously at the Gotham Independent Film Awards in January.
The Black Panther lead died this August at the age of 43 after privately struggling against colon cancer for four years.
When he is awarded the Gotham honor his Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom co-star Viola Davis will be getting the actress tribute, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Never before at the Gotham Independent Film Awards have the actor and actress tributes gone to performers from the same movie.
Last year the acting tributes went to Laura Dern and Sam Rockwell, with the directing tribute going to Ava DuVernay.
Although Laura Dern acted in four films that released in 2019 and Sam Rockwell acted in three, none of them overlapped.
Chadwick’s swan song performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom has also earned him a nomination in the best actor category at this year’s awards.

He is up against Jude Law for The Nest, Riz Ahmed for Sound Of Metal, Jesse Plemons for I’m Thinking OF Ending Things and John Magaro for First Cow.
Although Viola is being given the actress tribute she was not in fact nominated for best actress for her role as the famous blues singer Ma Rainey.
Based on a play by theater legend August Wilson, the film was directed by George C. Wolfe who is best known for his work on Broadway.
Castle star Ruben Santiago-Hudson, who has also acted on Broadway multiple times, adapted the script from the original theater piece.

The movie bowed in theaters the day before Thanksgiving although its release is limited amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will be able to reach a wider audience on December 18 when it becomes available for streaming on Netflix.
In the week since it appeared in theaters the movies has gotten exultant reviews and currently holds a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Denzel Washington, who co-starred with Viola Davis in a Broadway revival and then a film of August Wilson’s play Fences, is one of the producers of the new film.
