Champions League biggest wins after Liverpool thrashing

  • Maribor were hammered 7-0 by Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday
  • There have only been two wins by bigger margins in the competition’s history
  • Since 1992, two teams have won by eight goals – and Liverpool are one of them

Liverpool routed Maribor 7-0 in the Champions League but the result wasn’t even the club’s biggest win in the competition.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold were on the scoresheet as the Reds ran riot in Maribor on Tuesday.

However, they still fell short of a personal best – the eight-goal margin by which they hammered Besiktas at Anfield in November 2007.

On that occasion, Yossi Benayoun netted three and there were braces from Peter Crouch and Ryan Babel, as well as Steven Gerrard’s strike.

While nine teams have won by seven goals since the former European Cup rebranded in 1992, only two have claimed victory by eight.

As well as that Liverpool side of a decade ago, the Real Madrid team of 2015 managed the feat.

Madrid smashed Norwegian outfit Malmo 8-0 at the Bernabeu two years ago, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring four times and Karim Benzema hitting a hat-trick.

The only other club to have recorded more than one seven-goal battering in the tournament is Bayern Munich.

The result wasn't the club's biggest Champions League win, however

The Bavarians destroyed Basle 7-0 in 2012 and Shakhtar Donetsk by the same score in 2015.

Interestingly, Shakhtar make the list as both victims and enforcers of an almighty clubbing. The Ukrainian side were battered in Munich just five months after delivering their own seven-star thrashing to BATE Borisov.

Arsenal are the only other English team to hit seven, doing so in a 2007 meeting with Slabia Brague, while Celtic are the only British club to have been on the wrong end of a pounding.

Brendan Rodgers’ team were demolished in the Nou Camp by Barcelona in September last year.

Of the 11 instances of teams losing by seven or more goals in the Champions League, just three have done so on home turf – Maribor, BATE and MSK Zilina of Slovakia, who were crushed by Marseille in 2010.
