Worst outcomes for Premier League sides?

Manchester United:

Jose Mourinho’s side will obviously want to avoid Real Madrid in the next round, who have won the world’s greatest club competition two years on the bounce.

Bayern Munich will also be a tough draw for United, with the German champions looking rejuvenated since Jupp Heynckes returned to the fray. Their demolition job of PSG in their final group game is testament to that.

Juventus and Shakhtar Donestsk could also prove tricky customers but if United managed to get thrown in with Sevilla or Porto, you would have to fancy Mourinho’s side to progress over the two legs.

Chelsea:

Even though Antonio Conte won’t admit it, he will be yearning for Besiktas to be plucked out of the pot for their draw.

Chelsea were always going to find it difficult after being plunged in the same qualifying group as Roma and Atletico Madrid.

And, seemingly, it isn’t going to get any easier for them. PSG and Barcelona lurk in the next round.

Liverpool:

Liverpool have endured a mixed bag Champions League campaign so far.

They were rampant in attack, scoring seven goals on way to victory in two of their group E matches and amassed a total of 23 goals from their six qualifying games – the most any English club has ever scored in the groups.

But they also collapsed from 3-0 to draw in Seville, evoking memories of that famous night in Istanbul, but this time with the shoe on the other foot.

They face similar prospects to United of being pitted against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich and will be eager to avoid some of the big hitters this early on in the tournament.

Manchester City:

There’s a real sense City’s European voodoo will be put to bed this season with Pep Guardiola pulling the strings.

The Premier League leaders have looked impressive in the competition and stormed through to the knockout phase.

However, with sheer brilliance comes pressure and though it would be a beautiful game for the neutrals, City will also not want to face Real Madrid or Bayern Munich just yet if they can help it.

Tottenham:

Hats off to Mauricio Pochettino and his Spurs side.

To qualify as winners from a group containing the defending champions and German behemoths Borussia Dortmund is a massive achievement in itself.

Now, the show must go on. After already securing two positive results against Madrid and Dortmund, Spurs will fancy their chances against anyone.

Their biggest tests in the next round will come in the form of Juventus, Bayern Munich and Shakhtar, who could be the dark horses this season as they look capable of causing a potential upset.
