Champions League permutations: How things stand for matchday five

Group A

Borussia Dortmund need only a draw against Club Brugge to progress; if they win and Atletico Madrid lose to Monaco, they win the group.

Atletico progress if they beat Monaco, or if Brugge are beaten by the Bundesliga leaders.

Brugge must claim an unlikely win away to Dortmund to stay in the hunt, while Monaco are already eliminated from the Champions League.

Group B

Barcelona are safely into the round of 16, and will top Group B if they win at PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

Inter Milan will join them if they can get at least a draw away to Tottenham, with the London club facing a must-win situation.

PSV are now only able to play for Europa League football, and that will be beyond them if they lose to Barca.

Group C

In the tightest group, Liverpool are guaranteed to qualify if they win away to Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday, and Red Star Belgade do not beat Napoli.

Napoli likewise will go through if they see off the Serbians, and the French side cannot defeat the Premier League team.

PSG will face a shock elimination should they lose to Liverpool and Napoli win, while Red Star are out if they are beaten in Naples.

Group D

Porto lead this year’s most low-key group, and will win it outright if they beat second-placed Schalke on Wednesday.

A draw will also be enough for Porto if Galatasaray do not win away to Lokomotiv Moscow.

Schalke go through by beating Porto or if the Turkish side don’t get three points – it is a must-win for Galatasaray in Russia.

Group E

For all their domestic trouble, Bayern Munich reach the Champions League knockouts if they draw at home to Benfica on Tuesday.

Ajax reach the last 16 for the first time since 2005 if they beat AEK Athens, or if Benfica do not defeat the German giants.

Benfica must win to stand any chance of progression, while AEK need their first victory to stay in the hunt for third place.

Group F

Manchester City go through with a point in Lyon, and they win the group if they defeat the side currently sat second.

Lyon go through if they complete the double over City, although their superior head to head record over Hoffenheim means they only need two points from as many remaining matches.

Hoffenheim versus Shakhtar Donetsk is a sudden death encounter – the loser is eliminated from the Champions League.

Group G

Another giant doing better in Europe than at home, Real Madrid win Group G if they win away to Roma.

Should CSKA Moscow fail to beat Viktoria Plzen, Real progress regardless. That scenario in Russia also suits Roma, as long as they draw on Tuesday.

CSKA have to beat the Czech side to stay in the hunt for the top two, while Plzen are out of Europe altogether if they lose.

Group H

Juventus go through should they draw at home to Valencia on Tuesday night – a result Manchester United will also favour.

United progress if they beat Young Boys at Old Trafford and the Spanish side cannot claim a tricky win in Turin.

Valencia could still go through if they lose, but only if United do not win. Young Boys cannot reach the knockout stage.
