Timo Werner’s second-half penalty gave a dominant RB Leipzig a deserved 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.

Werner slotted past Hugo Lloris in the 58th minute after Ben Davies had fouled Konrad Laimer, putting the Bundesliga high-flyers in control ahead of the second leg on March 10.

Hugo Lloris – 6.5 

Kept Spurs in the tie with several crucial saves but powerless to stop penalty.  

Serge Aurier – 5

Created Spurs’ best chance but was run ragged by Angelino all night.

Davinson Sanchez – 6.5

Too often having to put out fires as Spurs were pulled this way and that by visitors.

Toby Alderweireld – 6

Stood up by Schick for early chance but found his feet as Spurs were pinned back.

Offered no threat going forward and rash challenge gave away crucial penalty.

Harry Winks – 6

Often overrun in midfield but was typically efficient with the ball and tenacious without it.

Giovani Lo Celso – 6.5

Spurs’ best source of creativity, driving them forward with quick thinking and neat passing.

Gedson Fernandes – 5

Struggled to get into the game. Forced to do a lot of defensive work to limit Angelino’s threat.

Dele Alli – 6.5

Fed off scraps for most of the night but worked hard and created some openings.

Steven Bergwijn – 6

Useful outlet with his pace and came close with neat early turn and shot. Faded.

Lucas Moura – 6 

Very limited service but missed two second-half chances including late header. 

Subs: Erik Lamela (Fernandes 64) – 6, Tanguy Ndombele (Alli 64) – 6.5

Not used: Gazzaniga, Vertonghen, Dier, Skipp, Tanganga 

Manager: Jose Mourinho – 5.5 

His change of shape after conceding first goal had limited effect as Spurs huffed and puffed for an equaliser. 

Referee: Cuneyt Cakir – 6

Duly punished several cynical challenges and got the big decision right with the penalty.

RB LEIPZIG (3-4-2-1) 

Peter Gulacsi – 6.5

Rarely tested but denied Lucas and tipped Lo Celso free kick on to the post.

Lukas Klostermann – 6

Tested by Berwijn early on but more influential going forward as visitors controlled the ball.

Ethan Ampadu – 6.5

Chelsea loanee looked classy in possession but early misjudgement almost set Lucas free.

Marcel Halstenberg – 6

Part of a Leipzig back three that spent most of the night trying to prise Spurs open.

Gave Davies an early headache going forward but occasionally tested by Berwijn at other end.

Happy to do the unfashionable stuff with and without the ball – booked for cynical trip on Bergwijn.

Konrad Laimer – 7

Also content to do the simple things and won spot kick with rare foray forward.

Angelino – 7

Constantly caused Aurier trouble going forward. Saw early shot deflected on to the post.

Christopher Nkunku – 6.5

Too often found space between the lines as Leipzig played the game in Spurs’ half. 

Timo Werner – 7.5

A class apart. Key cog in Leipzig’s attacking machine and cooly netted penalty. 

Patrick Schick – 6.5

Let down by his finishing but forward was a constant menace to Spurs backline.

Subs: Amadou Haidara – 6

Not used: Mvogo, Poulsen, Forsebberg, Lookman, Wolf, Olmo

Even after going ahead they managed the game well and limited Spurs to few chances.
