Channel 4 got a frosty reception this evening when it put adverts in the middle of its showing of The Snowman.

Christmas Eve viewers were aghast to find the 1982 animation, adapted from Raymond Briggs’s picture book, interrupted by a commercial break.

The 26-minute festive favourite has been broadcast on Channel 4 for the last 35 years, according to The Sun.

Author David Owen was among the peeved viewers to vent their outrage on Twitter, saying: ‘They put an advert break in The Snowman. Christmas is ruined.’

Tom Maynes said: ‘What kind of philistine puts an advert break in the middle of The Snowman? It’s a musical masterpiece that shouldn’t be interrupted.’

Another user called Ellen said: ‘I watch the Snowman every Christmas Eve and this is the first time I’ve seen Channel 4 give it an advert break. #BrexitBritain’

Henry Keane commented: ‘Adverts in the middle of The Snowman?! What a joke Channel 4!!!’

Also upset was a viewer called Vicky, who said: ‘Adverts during The Snowman!!! Why?!?!’

Sarah Avery said: ‘What the hell? Why put adverts in the middle of The Snowman?!? How to ruin the magic of a 20 minute programme for little ones. Smacks of greed and not Christmas goodwill. Unimpressed.’

And Ben Cairns said: ‘How on earth could you put an advert break in the middle of the #Snowman. Ruins the flow completely! Please don’t do it next year.’
