Despite her best efforts, she feels she cannot do anything to please her mother’s strict and overbearing standards.

In one scene, Natalie bursts in as Jessica is working and demands to see her mobile phone.

Jessica questions: ‘Mum are you drunk?’, as she sits working on her laptop.

And when she isn’t picked for the gymnast team, Natalie is totally indignant on her daughter’s behalf.

She even goes as far to threaten to move her from Liverpool to the city’s rival area Manchester, leaving all her friends and family behind.

But after viewers watched the scene, they were left less an impressed as some dubbed the mother ‘vile’ during ‘abusive’ scenes as they flocked to X to share their horror.

One penned: ‘It’s pretty dire so far. I doubt that I’ll bother watching the next episode #TheGathering’
