Channel Nine cancels reality show Rush following poor ratings

Channel Nine has confirmed that their adventure series Rush has been axed.

Hosted by Survivor star David Genat, the Amazing Race-inspired series debuted to a meagre metro rating of 301,000 in July.

And viewers remained unimpressed with the show, with just 270,000 fans tuning in for the season finale.

TV Blackbox reports that executives at Nine are already in talks with Genat, 46, for future projects.

It appears that viewers found the show’s format, which saw 12 everyday Australians dropped into exotic locations around the world, overly familiar.

Divided into teams of three, each group had complete a series of challenges for an ultimate prize of $100,000.

Tossed into the mix was a Survivor-type ‘vote’, where contestants ‘tossed out’ the weak link in each team.

‘It just felt tailor made for me so I immediately jumped on it,’ Genat told Nine soon after the show went to air.

He says he drew inspiration for his new role from his time as a cast member on Survivor and Celebrity Apprentice.

‘I got to see some of the greats do it – Jonathan LaPaglia on Survivor, Janine Allis on Celebrity Apprentice, you just get to see the way that works from the other side,’ he explained.

‘I kind of take inspiration from what they were doing, and then just wanted to give it my unique spin.’

David first found fame in 2002 when he won the Search for a Supermodel contest.

He later became an international male model and was featured in Vogue and Vanity Fair – most notably photographed by the iconic Mario Testino.

Genat returned to reality TV by starring in Australian Survivor: Champions v Contenders in 2019.

He was the 14th castaway voted out, and then returned to the franchise the following season for Australian Survivor All Stars, which he won.

In 2021, he joined the cast of The Celebrity Apprentice, where he was fired in task 7.
