Channel Nine’s Tony Jones is mocked on air over awkward moment with Bec Judd

Channel Nine’s Tony Jones continues to be mocked by his colleagues years after his  awkward moment with fellow presenter Bec Judd who famously dodged his kiss on air.

The television host was teased over the embarrassing moment during a segment on The Sunday Footy Show this morning.

The panel couldn’t resist poking fun at the sportscaster by airing an edited photo of a banner at the footy ground reading: ‘Many sleepless nights since that infamous miss, when Chompers approached Bec and left without a kiss.’

The photo had been a play on the banner that was displayed at the Collingwood clash with Geelong match last weekend.

The original banner, which referred to the Pies’ grand final loss last year, read: ‘We’ve studied the footage, we’ve found our mistake, redemption starts now with twice as much tape.’

And while his fellow presenters couldn’t help but share a few laughs, Jones did not find it as amusing.

‘Are you serious,’ Jones said. ‘It’s not “not bad” at all. It’s not (funny). Is that the sort of stuff you do on your little crappy radio show?’ Jones said to Kane Cornes who hosts an SEN radio program.

The joke stems back to 2016 when Rebecca Judd, who was pregnant at the time, snubbed Jones after he and their colleague, Peter Hitchener, bid her farewell.

Jones had wished Judd luck before eagerly leaning in to plant a kiss on her cheek, but she quickly pulled away and yelped, before breaking into fits of embarrassed giggles.

Jone was left red-faced and was seen crossing his arms before saying, ‘OK, good, this is going well.’

In an attempt to diffuse the awkwardness, Peter said: ‘You’re funny’ while politely laughing along with Rebecca and moving on with the news bulletin.

And as the cameras pulled away and the lights dimmed on set, the three could be seen laughing, with Tony doubled over in embarrassment.

On Twitter Tony admitted that the bizarre moment was ‘awkward.’

‘Well that was…. #awkward @becjuddloves,’ he tweeted.

Judd later told her Instagram followers that while the night didn’t exactly go to plan, she had a ball.

‘Okaaaaaaaaay then. Final weather bulletin before maternity leave didn’t quite go to plan but as always, thanks to my wonderful @9newsmelbourne family for the laughs. @phitchener9 @tonyjones9,’ she captioned a snap alongside her Channel Nine colleagues.

This was not the first time Rebecca and Tony have had a bizarre on-air encounter.

Back in 2013, Tony asked Rebecca to his house for a BBQ during a weather report, which she immediately turned down, making for awkward live television.

‘And Tony the good news is, nice and sunny for the weekend,’ she said, to which Tony replied: ‘You should come round for a barbie!’

Shutting him down completely, Rebecca firmly said ‘No thanks.’

However, the following night she happily accepted the offer when she was once again bid farewell on-air by Tony ahead of her maternity leave with her second child, Billie.

‘Well I did get spurned once, but I’ll give it another go … Do you want to come round for a barbie?’ Tony asked, to which Rebecca accepted, saying ‘I’d love to.’
