Her stratospheric rise to fame won her Best Pop Album of the Year at the Grammys and with it millions of diehard fans – most of them young teenage girls.

And now influential US singer, Chappell Roan, has sparked controversy as she said: ‘I don’t know a single person who is happy and has children, at this age.’

The 27-year-old, known for her drag aesthetic, extravagant costumes and punchy feminist lyrics, identifies as a lesbian and was asked on the Call Her Daddy podcast if she would ever have children.

Chappell responded: ‘All of my friends who have kids are in hell.

‘I have not met anyone who is happy or has light in their eyes who has a child under five, at this age, I have not met anyone who has slept.’

The Pink Pony Club singer’s remarks caused a generational divide as older mothers have insisted it ‘was not an accurate or healthy message to peddle, particuarly when the birth rate is down.’

One person wrote: ‘Chappell Roan going on Call Her Daddy saying none of her friends with kids are happy, is a prime example of why you cannot just vent to anyone.

‘I guarantee she has this perspective because a few of her mum’s friends are going through it – may a friendship like that never ever find me.

‘May the friendship of narcissistic childless women with no sense of loyalty ever find me.’

Another added: ‘This is why you only vent about parenting to other mum friends who get it.

‘Her viewpoint is so out of touch and disappointing. We need to celebrate motherhood.’

Younger mothers praise Chappell, who hails from Missouri, and say they have ‘never related more’ to the statement that ‘motherhood is hell’.

Meanwhile, childless women are also in support of the outspoken singer and argue the debate highlights how judgemental mothers can be to one another.

One video, which garnered one million likes on the video sharing app, TikTok, in which a young woman who does not have children yet said: ‘The people who have made me most scared to become a mother, are mothers.

‘What Chappell said is all I see because lots of mothers I see are like, “This is miserable” and mothers can also be the most competitive, nasty and judgemental people.

‘The way mothers talk about other mothers is dark.’
