Charity worker seeking asylum found dead in Swansea Marina

A charity worker threw himself into a river after being told he would have to leave the UK, an inquest heard.

Eyob Tefera, 27, was found in a city centre marina shortly after having multiple asylum requests turned down.

An inquest heard Eyob – who worked as a sports science lecturer in his native Ethiopia – but fled Africa after seeing Isis atrocities.

He arrived in Britain in 2015 and volunteered for local charities while making his claims for asylum.

But Swansea Coroner’s Court heard that days after having his application refused, Eyob was found dead in Swansea Marina.

The hearing was told Eyob suffered post traumatic stress disorder after witnessing terror atrocities including beheadings in Africa and having a friend murdered in Bristol.

He left Ethiopia in 2015 after paying a people trafficker to take him into Italy – and then made his way to Swansea via Calais.

Chris Matthews, of refugee charity Bloom, said Eyob had stayed with him and his wife in the days before his death.

He said: ‘His friend Mohammed was murdered in Bristol, this had a significant impact on his mental health.

‘Eyob suffered from post traumatic stress disorder – he witnessed beheadings conducted by Isis.

‘He told me he was going to see friends to celebrate Ethiopian New Year, I received a text from him saying he was going to stay at a friends. I said that I would see him tomorrow.

‘Later on in the week I found out he was found in the marina.’

The inquest heard CCTV footage showed him arriving at the marina after leaving the party at approximately midnight.

He then stepped over the barriers and jumped down the 10ft drop into the water.

Acting senior coroner for Swansea Colin Phillips recorded a conclusion of suicide and said Eyob had drowned.

He said: ‘Mr Tefera had been exposed to some horrific incidents within his short life.

‘He had witnessed atrocities by Isis and one in this country when his close friend was murdered.

‘He had been abandoned by many of the voluntary charity agencies.

‘CCTV shows him staggering and deliberately going through the barriers and to the other side, and moments later he drops into the marina.

‘We see ripples in the water and he is not seen exiting, then his body was recovered on 14 September.’

A JustGiving page was set up after Eyob death to raise funds to fly his body back to his family in Ethiopia.
