She recently swapped Monaco for the catwalks of Milan as she rubbed shoulders with celebrities at fashion week.

But Princess Charlene was back on home turf this week as she joined her husband for a glittering charity gala.

South Africa-born Charlene, 39, could be seen cosying up to Prince Albert II as they led the glamorous arrivals at the ‘Monte-Carlo Gala For The Global Ocean’ event on Thursday evening.

The star-studded event, held in honour of Leonardo DiCaprio’s environmental work, was held at the Monaco Garnier Opera House.

The former Olympic swimmer looked opted for a strapless gown with a dramatic sweeping skirt and heavily embellished bodice.

Her stunning black and gold number boasted a daring thigh-split panel and was teamed with minimal accessories.

The Princess and mother to Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques shared a tender moment on the red carpet with husband Albert, son of the late Grace Kelly.

The couple were joined tonight by a host of stars including Adrien Brody and actress Olga Kurylenko.

Prince Albert, the reigning monarch of the Principality of Monaco, recently opened up in a candid interview about life in the public eye, saying it can be a case of having to ‘grin and bear it’ during public engagements.

He told Graham Bensinger: ‘I consider myself a private person most of the time so it’s hard to perform in a very public situation and have to do… public appearances and speeches depending on what it is and what the situation is. And of course you get to meet great people.

‘Even at a younger age you try and figure your way around and at a later stage in life then it becomes a little tedious, but there are things you have to do and you have to grin and bear it and push forward.

‘You kind of learn early on to say you don’t have a choice.

‘You could just walk away and have your own life but that would be, first of all, not respecting what my father and mother did for this country, and trying to keep that moral obligation that there is to lead this nation and be the head of state.’
