Before Charles Barkley was an NBA legend for entertained the masses as a broadcaster, he wowed fans as a standout at Auburn. That’s a loyalty Barkley holds near and dear to this day.

So when he was asked about Alabama football, Barkley had to retort with some insults.

‘I can’t root for Alabama under any circumstances,’ Barkley said during an interview during the second half of an Auburn-USC men’s basketball game last Sunday. ‘I love Coach Saban. He’s been great to me. But I can never root for Alabama.’

‘Under any circumstances. I told you, if they played Afghanistan, I’d be pulling for Afghanistan,’ Barkley added.

Barkley played for Auburn from 1981-84 before he was drafted No. 5 overall in the 1984 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Alabama is a constant topic of hate around Auburn, as the two universities are archrivals and the only ones in the ‘Heart of Dixie’ to have high-major college athletic programs.

The Crimson Tide were in the news this month for jumping undefeated Florida State in the College Football Playoff rankings for one of the four semifinal berths.

Alabama lost one game this season to fellow CFP competitor Texas and ended Georgia’s 26-game win streak in the Southeastern Conference Championship.

Barkley is an 11-time NBA All-Star and won the NBA’s MVP Award in 1993 with the Phoenix Suns.

Barkley will surely be rooting for Michigan when they face Alabama in the Rose Bowl with a berth in the national championship on the line on New Year’s Day.
