CHARLOTTE KRISTENSENS’S very best vermouths

This Thursday (21 March) is World Vermouth Day – a big celebration for the aromatic fortified wine flavoured with spices, botanicals and herbs. Born in Italy, the drink has had a renaissance, produced globally (notably in France and Spain) and captivating palates worldwide.

From crisp blancos to rich rossos, try it over ice or in a classic cocktail – perhaps a Manhattan.

Contratto Vermouth Rosso (17%), £25.30, amathusdrinks.com.

With its earthy blood orange and aniseed nuances, I like to serve this premium bittersweet rosso on the rocks and in my favourite cocktail – a negroni.

Gonzalez Byass Vermouth La Copa Blanco (15%), £16.49, masterof malt.com.

Crack open the olives and pour me a large glass over ice! This is a refreshing blanco style that delivers a sweet pick-me-up. An ideal early evening apéritif.

Lustau Vermut Rosé (15%), £15 (50cl), Waitrose.

Step into spring with this pretty pink rendition, featuring fragrant flowers and a dash of vanilla – charming served with tonic and a grapefruit twist to garnish it.

Martini Floreale Non-Alcoholic Vermouth (0%), £10, ocado.com.

For all the flavour without the headache, this de-alcoholised offering from the Martini team boasts sweet floral notes, perfect for refreshing long cocktails.
