Chechen MP is shot dead as he drove to work

The horrifying moment a Russian Communist MP was shot dead while driving to work was captured on a dashcam.

An unknown gunman opened fire on Magomed Askhabov, from south-western Russia’s autonomous Republic of Chechnya.

Investigators have said Mr Askhabov may have been killed by ISIS-inspired terrorists, but Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has poured  water on this theory.

He claimed that the murder was not political, Crime Russia reports, posting on Instagram that this had been confirmed by ‘numerous independent sources, as well as the reports of law enforcement agencies’.

Mr Askhabov, head of the committee on land relations, was on the way to work to the city of Grozny when the Toyota Camry that he was driving was shot by an unknown gunman.

Dashcam footage shows another vehicle driving alongside Mr Askhabov’s to his left.

Gunshots are heard and suddenly the car rams into a lamppost, destroying the windscreen before the car spins over and turns onto its side.

Local police have launched a criminal case for murder connected with the public duties of a person.

They are also looking to prosecute for illicit trafficking in weapons. The assailant has not yet been identified.

It is reported that the investigation is under the personal command of Alexander Bastrykin, 64, head of the investigative committee of the Russian Federation.

Following Askhabov’s death, Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov released a statement describing him as ‘a friend, a brother and a colleague’.

The killing is the most recent in a series of high-profile assassinations in Russia.
