Chelsea 1-1 Norwich (5-3 pens): Hazard scores winning pen

Chelsea staggered into the FA Cup fourth round by winning on penalties on a night of controversy and confusion at Stamford Bridge when three players were booked for diving and two of them sent off.

Michy Batshuayi put the Premier League champions ahead in the second-half but teenager Jamal Lewis struck in the fourth minute of stoppage-time to take the replay into extra-time.

Willian, Pedro and Alvaro Morata were all shown yellow cards for diving as they attempted to win penalties, decisions made by referee Graham Scott and supported by his video assistant Mike Jones.

Pedro was sent off when he received a second yellow for a mistimed slide tackle on Wes Hoolahan in the second period of extra-time and Morata was dismissed for dissent, a second yellow which followed seconds after his angry reaction to the first.

Having spent most of the game appealing for penalties which were not given, the tie was settled by spot-kicks, taken the old-fashioned way, one at a time.

Willy Caballero saved from Nelson Oliveira and Chelsea did not miss, with Eden Hazard converting the winning penalty to secure a fourth-round tie against Newcastle.

It did not seem likely to be so fraught when Batshuayi opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second half of normal time to end a wait for a goal which had stretched into its fifth hour of football.

Willian and Kenedy linked up in a tight area on the Chelsea left and Batshuayi escaped the attentions of Grant Hanley to find space to meet the cross at the near post.

Angus Gunn had no chance as the ball crashed into the roof of his net and relief washed around the stadium.

Norwich’s stubborn resistance had finally been broken and Batshuayi had his first goal since mid-October, not including a couple for the Under 21 team in the Checkatrade Trophy at Milton Keynes.

Until then, little had gone right for the Belgian centre forward, who scored the goal to win the title last season and is wanted on loan by Sevilla and a host of other teams but apparently not by Antonio Conte.

HOW THE CRAZY NIGHT UNFOLDED

55min: After an uneventful first half, Michy Batshuayi puts Chelsea ahead with a close-range finish.

62min: Referee Graham Scott books Pedro for a blatant dive in the box after skipping past Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

90+4min: Jamal Lewis sends the game into extra time when he heads in Timm Klose’s cross.

91min: Willian goes down in the box after appearing to be clipped by Klose but Scott does not give a penalty. Despite replays showing contact, the Video Assistant Referee does not overturn Scott’s decision as it was not an ‘obvious’ error and Willian is booked for diving.

95min: This time it’s Morata shouting for a penalty, making the TV sign to the referee after falling under a Klose challenge, but no spot-kick is given.

109min: Scott waves away claims for another Chelsea penalty after Klose blocks a shot and the ball appears to hit his arm.

118min: Pedro is given his marching orders, picking up his second yellow card for chopping down Wes Hoolahan to halt a Norwich counter-attack.

120min: Morata becomes the third Chelsea player to be booked for diving after he goes down rather easily under a Christoph Zimmermann challenge. Morata reacts angrily to referee Scott, who promptly brandishes a second yellow for dissent and sends off the striker!

Batshuayi’s touch deserted him at key moments in the build-up and he misplaced passes and was easily shackled by central defender Christoph Zimmermann.

All that was forgotten as he celebrated Chelsea’s first goal since Marcos Alonso found the target in a thrilling Premier League derby at Arsenal, two weeks ago.

Batshuayi’s goal also served to uncork a tense replay as Norwich were forced to venture forward and play with more risk.

Josh Murphy hit a post with a bouncing volley as the Championship side searched of an equaliser and Caballero made a fabulous save to thwart James Maddison.

Pedro, at the other end, was booked for a dive as he searched for the second goal to ease his team into round four and the game ended at a frenzied tempo.

With the game in extra-time, Willian was also shown a yellow card for diving. This one appeared to be more debatable but referee Scott was backed by his video assistant.

SUPER STAT

5 — Chelsea have now failed to score in all five of their first halves in 2018. They have gone in goalless at the break in two games v Arsenal, two v Norwich and one v Leicester.

The clock had ticked into the fourth minute of added time when Lewis levelled. Timm Klose crossed from the right and the teenager glanced a header past Caballero and in off the far post.

Conte, having grumbled long and hard about the fixture schedule, suddenly had another 30 minutes to consider ahead of a return to Premier League action at Brighton, on Saturday lunch-time.

Plans to give his first-teamers the night off were abandoned. On went Morata, Andreas Christensen, N’Golo Kante and Hazard.

The Chelsea manager started with his second-string side, as he did in the original tie, making nine changes from Saturday’s draw against Leicester.

Then, he twisted in frustration on the touchline as they created and wasted a cluster of chances. Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Willian all missed the target during a dominant opening phase.

David Luiz wobbled a free-kick straight into the hands of goalkeeper Gunn and Kenedy saw a volley blocked by Ivo Pinto.

Frustration crept up and the home crowd roared for a penalty when Davide Zappacosta lashed a shot into Klose.

It struck him on an arm but there was no case for a penalty and this would prove to be the start of a pattern.

Gunn made a terrific save with his fingertips to turn a dipping Drinkwater volley against the bar and earned his luck as the ball rebounded, hit the back of his arms and spun to safety.

Norwich barely made it into Chelsea’s defensive third of the pitch during the opening half-hour when suddenly Nelson Oliveira almost gave them the lead.

Batshuayi, deep his own half, was guilty of a sloppy cross field pass, which found Oliveira 30 yards from goal and his instant swerving shot beat Caballero, clipped the bar and bounced over.

Norwich took confidence from his near miss. Moments later, Oliveira side-stepped Azpilicueta and went for goal again. This time his attempted drifted wide.

Murphy stretched Chelsea on the counter-attack and the Championship side started to show a little more adventure until their momentum was punctured by Batshuayi’s goal, 10 minutes into the second-half.

Even then, Norwich would not surrender, forced the Premier League team back and summoned enough threat to persuade Conte to send his first-teamers to protect the lead, late in the game.

Morata missed two good chances before teenager Lewis took the game into extra-time.

Hazard was sent on as the fourth substitute in extra-time which was dominated by various appeals from Chelsea for penalties. None were given but the tie would be decided from the spot with Hazard scoring the winner.
