Chelsea ‘enquire about Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi after Juventus turn down Federico Chiesa approach… with Borussia Dortmund and West Ham also tracking Italy Euro 2020 winner’

  • Domenico Berardi impressed for Italy as his side went all the way at Euro 2020
  • The 26-year-old has only represented Sassuolo at club level since his debut
  • But reports in Italy claim Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund have made enquiries
  • Chelsea are said to have had an £85m bid for Federico Chiesa rejected last week

Chelsea have enquired into signing Sassuolo and Italy forward Domenico Berardi, according to reports in Italy.

The 26-year-old impressed for his country at Euro 2020, claiming two assists in the group stages on the Azzurri’s way to winning the tournament after beating England in the final on penalties.

The forward has played his entire club career at Sassuolo since his first-team debut in 2012, having famously turned down a move to Juventus despite being co-owned by the Serie A giants between 2013 and 2015.

But Sportitalia claim that the Blues have made enquiries into Berardi’s availability, while adding Borussia Dortmund and West Ham are also tracking the Italy star.

Reports last week claimed the Stamford Bridge outfit had failed with an £85million bid to sign Federico Chiesa with Juventus unwilling to open talks over the winger they had signed only last summer.

But the latest reports out of Italy now claim the Champions League winners have switched their focus to Chiesa’s international team-mate Berardi, who has two years remaining on his Sassuolo contract.

Berardi scored 17 goals and laid on a further eight assists in 30 Serie A appearances for Sassuolo last season.

Serie A sides AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina have also shown an interest in Berardi, but reports suggest he is more likely to leave his home country should he depart this summer.

Chelsea’s hunt for a new wide forward comes amid reports Callum Hudson-Odoi is set to stay at Stamford Bridge despite renewed interest from Bayern Munich.

The England international’s stance of wanting to stay and fight for his place is a major blow to Bayern, who have been long-term admirers and had hoped to construct a deal around a swap for Kingsley Coman.
