‘Thank you Roman… The Best Owner in the WORLD’: Chelsea legend John Terry pays tribute to Abramovich after Russian owner puts the club up for sale
- Roman Abramovich has set an asking price of £3bn as Chelsea go up for sale
- The Russian is selling up due to the growing economic sanctions in the UK
- John Terry responded to the news by heaping praise on the billionaire
Former Chelsea captain John Terry heaped praise on Roman Abramovich as he responded to the news that the Chelsea owner would be selling the club following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Abramovich confirmed the reports on Chelsea’s website and social media channels on Wednesday with a statement.
The Russian billionaire accepted that he could no longer continue in his capacity as owner due to the ‘current situation’.
He also said he would be writing off the £1.5bn debt he is owed and that all money generated from his sale of the club will go to a foundation benefiting ‘all victims of the war in Ukraine’.
Chelsea fans immediately responded by expressing their gratitude towards Abramovich, who has turned the club into one of the biggest and most successful in the world.
And few were more glowing in their praise than his former player Terry, who commentated: ‘Thank you Roman. The Best Owner in the WORLD.’

The comment received over 50,000 likes in the space of six hours as Blues fans showed their love for two icons of the club.
Terry captained Chelsea to 16 trophies under Abramovich, including five Premier League titles.
Abramovich has put a £3bn price tag on Chelsea as he prepares to end his near-two decade ownership of the club.
It comes as the 55-year-old – who has long-denied links to the Putin regime – is also reportedly putting his London property portfolio up for sale.
Roman Abramovich has put Chelsea up for sale and wants around £3billion for the club
Chelsea believe a sale to a US tycoon is their best route as they look for a new owner
MailOnline reported on Wednesday morning that the club had been put on the market, with an asking price of at least £3billion. And last night Abramovich said in a statement: ‘I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart.
‘In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the club … I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid.’
Abramovich has instructed American bank the Raine Group to handle the sale.
Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss claims he has been approached and is considering an offer as part of a consortium which also includes Todd Boehly, the co-owner of baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers.
Sources claim Abramovich believes Chelsea is worth more than £3bn. However, it seems inevitable he will have to lower his expectations.
