Chelsea lose two key long-term staff members as restructure under Todd Boehly continues to take shape

Chelsea’s academy structure is reportedly set to undergo major changes, led by Joe Shields and Sam Jewell. 

Director of football development Neil Bath and head of youth development Jim Fraser have left the club, signaling the dawn of a new era at Cobham.

The two men helped establish Chelsea’s academy as a top producer of young talent with the likes of Reece James, Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount coming through the ranks.

Bath became the club’s academy director in 2004 and was promoted two years ago. He worked closely with Fraser, who moved into his new role last year. 

The Guardian report that Bath approached Chelsea to discuss his future earlier this year and the club were open to handing him new responsibilities in the hope of keeping such an experienced figure.

Bath was the man put in charge of the redevelopment of the training ground in 2023 but he has now informed the Blues of his decision to leave.

Bath is a highly respected figure at the club and Chelsea have respected his decision which comes after over 20 years of service. The report adds received an offer from another club.

Shields has made an impression since joining the recruitment team in October 2022 and will step into a senior role. 

Shields spent nine years at Manchester City and held various roles across both recruitment and the club’s academy before becoming head of senior recruitment at Southampton.

Director of global recruitment Sam Jewell will be working closely with Shields in the revamp

He is believed to have assisted with the signings of Tosin Adarabioyo, Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia thanks to his connections with City and knows new manager Enzo Maresca well.

Jewell, son of former Premier League manager Paul Jewell, impressed at Brighton before becoming Chelsea’s director of global recruitment.
