At least one child is feared dead and two others rushed to hospital as a fire consumed a family home.

Firefighters rushed to the blaze on Brittliffe Close in Singleton, in the NSW Hunter Valley, about 3.30am on Wednesday.

Neighbours awoke hearing screams in the middle of the night coming from the house where four children lived with their parents.

At least one child is feared dead and two others rushed to hospital as a fire consumed a suburban home

Police were first on scene and tried to search the house for trapped family members, but the flames were too intense.

About 20 firefighters soon arrived and rescued four people and took them to Singleton Hospital but there were two unaccounted for.

The fire is believed to have started in the front room of the red brick house and investigations are underway.
