A 10-year-old boy who took his mother’s pickup truck was injured when the vehicle crashed during a high-speed police chase in Southeast Texas.
Vidor police said an officer saw the pickup run a red light after authorities received several calls around 7.30am on Wednesday about a recklessly driven vehicle.
When the police car’s emergency lights were activated, the pickup truck accelerated, reaching speeds of up to 85mph before going off the road.

Authorities, who only realized after the wreck that the driver was a child, said the boy lost control over the truck and it rolled at least once near a curve at the intersection of Mansfield Ferry Road and South Main. He was airlifted (pictured) to a hospital in Houston

The boy, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, had to be extricated from the truck, until a medical helicopter arrived.
He was then taken to the Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston in serious condition.
Photos of the accident showed the badly wrecked Ram 1500 pickup truck. The front end of the black truck was completely ripped off and one of the tires was smashed in.
Police said following the accident, a woman called the Orange County sheriff’s office to tell them her son took her vehicle after becoming upset over a disciplinary issue.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the boy is in stable condition. The incident is still being investigated and police have not released the identity of the child or mother.
