Mr Tira, who is now 32, first abused the then 13-year-old inside his family home.

The young boy woke up to find Mr Tira lying in his bed, touching his leg near his groin. Mr Tira told the boy when he confronted him in 2006 that he “loved him like a son”.

In 2011, the younger brother woke up one night to find Mr Tira touching his penis. He went back to sleep and Mr Tira was gone when he woke up.

The third brother was sexually assaulted in 2014, when Mr Tira lay next to him on the couch and began hugging and kissing him despite his protests and his mother being upstairs. He also attempted to touch the teenager’s penis through his pants.

After learning of his heinous acts, the boys’ mother contacted the church in 2014, but no action was taken until an anonymous person approached police.

He wasn’t interviewed until April of last year, saying the accusations were ‘mind-boggling’ and the three brothers must have been ‘confused’.

He pleaded guilty to three counts indecent treatment of a child at Maroochydore District Court on Monday.

Mr Tira was sentenced to nine months prison for the first incident, and 15 months each for the other two crimes which will be served concurrently.

He will be eligible for parole in just three months.
