The children of the New York Police Department officer who was slain by an emotionally disturbed man have spoken out five months after her tragic death.
They spoke at a press conference attended by the New York Daily News during which it was formally announced that the three children of Officer Miosotis Familia, a single mother, were going to receive a three-bedroom home through donations galvanized by the Daily News, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Skyview Apartments LLC.
The donations totaled $818,000. The family will live in The Bronx. They will be able to move in before the Christmas holiday.
A trust fund for Familia’s three children will pay for maintenance fees and property taxes.
Genesis Villella, 20, and twins Delilah and Peter Vega, both 12, lost their 48-year-old mother this past summer.

She added, per a report from ABC New York: ‘She was the one who kept us afloat.
‘She used to tell us that because she was a single parent, that we shouldn’t feel less fortunate, or that we couldn’t live the life that we wanted.’
Officer Familia was sitting in her marked vehicle this past July when 34-year-old Alexander Bonds shot at her through the passenger side window near the intersection of 183rd Street and Grand Concourse in the Bronx.

Officers caught up with Bonds about a block away and killed him in a hail of about 20 bullets when he pulled a stolen revolver, police said.
Only a few hours earlier, his girlfriend called 911 to report that she was worried about his unstable behavior, police said.
Familia had served in the force for 12 years. Previously, she had worked at New York University Hospital and the American Red Cross.
Friends said she became an officer to help her community, and her family was heartbroken.
Familia was the first female NYPD officer to die in the line of duty since the September 11 attacks in 2001.
