Chilean ‘burglary tourists’ that broke into Marcus Wareing’s London £5million home wanted in Chile

Four Chilean ‘burglary tourists’ who broke into TV chef Marcus Wareing’s £5million London home were wanted for a catalogue of crimes.

The Michelin-starred restaurateur, 49, was staying at his second home in Kent with his wife Jane when Danko Carvajal-Donaire, 20, Claudio Donoso, 20, Nicolas Portilla Astorga, 27, and Jorge Rojas, 22, smashed their way into their Wimbledon mansion and grabbed £33,000 of valuables from their bedroom.

But it has now been revealed the gang, who posed audaciously with some of the jewellery they stole before being caught, were wanted for a string of serious offences across Europe, the US and Latin America.

Carvajal-Donaire had four warrants out for his arrest and had been arrested early in Spain in early 2019 for using a fake passport. He was caught by police in Italy a few weeks later and deported back to Chile.

Rojas was deported from the US in March 2019 and denied entry into Germany a month later, while Donoso and Astorga had ‘crimes against property’ on their records, the Evening Standard reports.

Despite their files being littered with offences and being wanted on a number of charges, the four men were still able to carry out last October’s raid on the Masterchef star’s home.

It has now been revealed the gang (Danko Carvajal-Donaire and Nicolas Portilla Astorga pictured) who raided Marcus Wareing’s south London home last year, who posed audaciously with some of the jewellery they stole before being caught (seen here), were wanted for a string of serious offences across Europe, the US and Latin America

They took his gold Rolex, a pair of Omega watches worth £12,000, and another watch engraved with ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ – a nod to his former mentor Gordon Ramsay, who he famously fell out with.

Mrs Wareing’s valuable bracelets, earrings and gold chains, a £1,500 Cartier watch, £520 Louboutin shoes and a locket with irreplaceable pictures of her beloved father were also stolen.

They were last month jailed for three years and four months each after a trial at Kingston Crown Court.

Their convictions were a relief to the Metropolitan Police after a wave of ‘burglary tourism’ saw thieves flown in from South America and for two or three to days to target homes before jetting off again.

Mobsters have been recruiting burglars from across Latin America for more than eight years to burgle as many homes as possible.

When Carvajal-Donaire arrived in the UK in early October 2019 he was wanted for a number of crimes in his native Chile including robbery and gun possession.

Four months before that he was arrested in Italy for using his brother Jordan’s documents after he was jailed for five years in Chile, documents from the country’s police force the PDI reveal.

On the day he was arrested in Banstead, Surrey, he was still using his jailed brother’s ID.

His fellow gang member Rojas had Chilean arrest warrants for violent robbery when he was found in the US and deported in March 2019.

Somehow he was able to fly to Germany, but was barred from getting in because of his ‘negative background’, Chilean police say.

Then just six months later he was on a plane again, this time to London, on his way to burgle Wareing’s house south of the capital.

But after today’s report that they were wanted on a string of serious offences already, officials hit have out demanding to know why they were able to get into Britain.

Local Conservative MP for Wimbledon Stephen Hammond told the Standard: ‘Why weren’t these people checked properly? If one of these people was deported from the US, it’s probably a good reason not to give him a tourist visa to the UK.’

A Home Office spokesman told the paper: ‘We are doing everything in our power to prevent foreign criminals entering our country, including carrying out checks on all new arrivals at passport control.

‘Border Force officers can, and do refuse entry to any known foreign national offenders.

‘Closer working between the police and Home Office immigration enforcement in recent years has led to the earlier identification and checking of foreign national offenders.’

During the court case, Wareing said his family’s loss of sentimental items in the raid had been ‘enormous’, telling jurors: ‘The loss of the jewellery and watches is deeply upsetting’.

But he added: ‘We are pleased that the men have been caught and would like to thank Wimbledon police for assisting us during this time. They made us feel safe and secure again in our home and were utterly brilliant.’
