A woman allegedly threw a newborn baby into a public bin today in the Chinese city of Hefei.

CCTV footage has emerged online showing the woman putting a red bucket, which was said to contain the baby, into a bin before calmly walking away.

The baby was found by a sanitation worker and it had already been dead, it is said.

It remains unclear whether the baby was alive or dead while allegedly being dumped in the bin.

The sanitation worker told Pear Video that she was trying to empty the bin when she saw the body of the baby.

She said she was ‘scared’ and asked other people to call the police.

Apparently the CCTV footage of the street shows the red bucket had been placed in the bin by a woman in black in broad daylight.

Pear Video quoted an eyewitness who claimed that the baby was about 3.5 kilograms (7.7 pounds) and had thick, dark hair.

Police have launched an investigation into the case, according to Pear Video.

According to the Chinese Criminal Law, if a person is found guilty of abandoning their children, he or she could be jailed for up to five years.
