A $1.39 bottle of tomato sauce, an unlikely loaf of bread and a $2.79 block of unsalted butter are among the best budget supermarket buys, according to consumer experts.

Australian consumer advocate CHOICE has revealed the top supermarket-owned products from Aldi, Coles and Woolworths following a blind taste test of more than 70 grocery items.

Besides its affordable price tags, the food industry judges found the house brands tasted no different from well-known labels, with some even outshining the expensive alternatives that often cost more than double.

‘House brand products have really improved in quality recently, and often score well in our testing,’ CHOICE food editor Rachel Clemons said.

‘They’re a good option if you’re looking to save a bit of money on your grocery bill, as they’re usually a fraction of the price of more premium products.’
