When it comes to selecting toilet paper for the family there tends to be two main considerations – value for money and softness.
Choosing one which delivers on all fronts isn’t always easy, so to help, Australian consumer watchdog CHOICE put a number of top selling brands to the test.
Its report rated products stocked in Coles and Woolworths and ranked leading varieties such as Kleenex on categories such as softness, disintegration, separation and cost.
The results reveal which brand of toilet paper ticks all the boxes and also offers the best value with one top rated product priced at a surprisingly low 29 cents per 100 sheets.

1. Quilton Toilet Tissue Double Length Print
Taking out the top spot on the CHOICE list of toilet paper recommendations is a three-ply product by Quilton.
Its Toilet Tissue Double Length Print is priced at $9.50 for a nine-pack. This averages out to a cost of just $1.05 per roll.
Its overall rating of 83 per cent was collated from scores across a number of categories.
These included a disintegration test (which tested how the durability of the product) at 90 per cent, a separation test at 80 per cent and softness score of 90 per cent.
Cost per 100 sheets: 29 cents.
Safe Original Toilet Tissue Soft & Gentle Deco Emboss 100% Recycle Long Roll, priced at $6.72 for a six-pack (pictured left) was ranked second, while Emporia Skin Sense, priced at $7.00 for a nine-pack was rated third (pictured right)
2. Safe Original Toilet Tissue Soft & Gentle Deco Emboss 100% Recycle Long Roll
Coming in at second place was Safe Original Toilet Tissue Soft & Gentle Deco Emboss 100% Recycle Long Roll.
This two-ply product, which is made using recycled paper, holds an overall rating of 82 per cent – just one per cent lower than CHOICE’s top-ranked brand.
It is priced at $6.72 for a six-pack, which averages out the cost per roll at $1.12. The product ranked at 91 per cent for disintegration, 79 per cent for separation, and 90 per cent for softness.
Cost per 100 sheets: 28 cents.
3. Emporia Skin Sense
Taking the third position for best-rated products on the consumer report was Emporia Skin Sense, a three-ply product priced at $7.00 for a nine-pack.
This brand of toilet paper holds an 82 per cent rating overall. Its softness score is ranked at 90 per cent. Its disintegration test score is 90 per cent, and it holds a separation test score of 81 per cent.
Cost per roll averages out at 77 cents a roll.
Cost per 100 sheets: 43 cents.

4. Quilton Toilet Tissue Prints
Fourth place, with an overall score of 81 per cent was awarded to Quilton Toilet Tissue Prints.
The three-ply product is priced at $7 for an eight-pack. This averages out to 87 cents per roll.
Its ranking across the main categories saw it handed a score of 88 per cent for its disintegration test, 76 per cent for its separation test and it holds a softness score of 90 per cent.
Cost per 100 sheets: 49 cents.

Kleenex Luxury Collection Aloe Vera Soft and Gentle, priced at $4.30 for a six-pack, took out the report’s fifth spot.
It holds an overall score of 81 per cent. Its softness score is ranked at 90 per cent, its disintegration test score at 88 per cent, and its separation test score is 76 per cent.
Cost per roll averages out to 71 cents.
Cost per 100 sheets: $0.48.
6. Quilton Toilet Tissue Double Length Floral
Sixth place position, with an overall score of 81 per cent, was awarded to Quilton Toilet Tissue Double Length Floral.
The three-ply product costs $10 for an eight-pack which averages out to $1.25 per roll.
It holds a softness ranking of 90 per cent, a disintegration test score of 88 per cent, and a separation test score of 76 per cent.
Cost per 100 sheets: 35 cents.
Quilton King Size, priced at $4 for a six-pack, took out seventh place on the report
7. Quilton King Size
A seventh-place ranking, with a score of 81 per cent, was awarded to Quilton King Size. Its three-ply toilet paper is priced at $4 for a six-pack.
The product was given a 90 per cent ranking for softness. Its disintegration test ranking is 90 per cent and its separation test ranking is 62 per cent.
Cost per 100 sheets: 38 cents.
Sorbent Silky White, priced at $5, took out the eighth highest ranking on the list
8. Sorbent Silky White
The eighth spot on the report is held by Sorbent Silky White with an overall rating of 81 per cent.
The 10-pack product is priced at $5. This averages out to just 50 cents per roll.
It fares well across the main categories with a softness score of 90 per cent, its disintegration test score is 90 per cent and its separation score is 76 per cent.
Cost per 100 sheets: 28 cents.

Coming in at ninth, is Quilton Toilet Tissue White. The 10-pack, which is priced at $5, was awarded an overall score of 81 per cent.
The three-ply product was handed a score of 90 per cent for softness and 90 per cent for how well it stood up to disintegration.
It fared reasonably well in its separation test and was given a score of 76 per cent.
Cost per 100 sheets: 49 cents.
10. Quilton Toilet Tissue Double Length White
Coming in at tenth place was Quilton Toilet Tissue Double Length White.
The three-ply product, priced at $10 for an eight-pack, was awarded a score of 81 per cent.
It holds a solid softness score of 91 per cent, a disintegration test score of 88 per cent and a separation test score of 76 per cent.
