Chris Hemsworth jokes about being the ‘next Lara Bingle’

He was one of the many Australian A-listers who appeared in a Crocodile Dundee ‘film trailer’ which turned out to be an advertisement for Tourism Australia.

And appearing on The Project on Tuesday, Chris Hemsworth joked about taking over the mantle from another famous local tourism ambassador.

More than a decade after Lara Bingle became famous for her role in the Where The Bloody Hell Are You? ads, the Thor actor, 34, said he was happy to take her place.

Speaking to Chris about the famous Crocodile Dundee ad, host Waleed Aly said: ‘You’ve joined the pantheon of people who have contributed to Australian tourism ads… this is a very rich tradition. I’m sure you’re familiar with that.’

He then asked: ‘Are you ready for the burden of being the next Lara Bingle?’

Chris laughed, before responding: ‘I was anxious about taking on that position, yeah. But I’m happy to be the next Lara Bingle if that is asked of me.’

Lara Worthington (née Bingle) was an unknown model when she starred in Tourism Australia’s Where The Bloody Hell Are You? campaign in 2006 at the age of 19.

Controversy ensued when the $180million ads were pulled in countries such as Britain, which wouldn’t allow the word ‘bloody’ to appear in TV versions of the campaign or on roadside billboards.

Canada also had concerns about the word ‘hell’ as well as the references to alcohol consumption.

Although the campaign was ultimately deemed a failure, it did serve as a launching pad for Lara’s media career.

Meanwhile, Chris who has fronted a number of Tourism Australia campaigns recently was part of the star-studded Australian cast to take part in the Crocodile Dundee ad.

The clip – which featured the likes of Margot Robbie, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Liam Hemsworth – went viral as many viewers thought a sequel to the highly successful film was in the works.

However, when the full trailer was aired during half-time at the Superbowl in the US, it was revealed to be an ad touting Australia as a holiday destination.
