One of the most iconic landmarks in Disney World is receiving a face lift in 2020 to mark the 70th anniversary of the movie that inspired its creation.

Cinderella Castle was first built near the entrance to the Magic Kingdom in Disney World Florida in 1971 but will be getting a major makeover this year as the classic animated movie reaches its special milestone.

One of Disney World’s most recognizable landmarks, the Cinderella Castle is also one of the most photographed structures in the US.

The refurbishment will give the castle a new bright look, adding pink and blue towers with gold spires and accents, according to the new artwork released on Monday.

The Cinderella Castle was first inspired by the movie and its style ‘represents a romantic conception of a French palace-fortress’.

‘While the base of the castle resembles a medieval fortress typifying the Romanesque architecture and castles of the 11th through 13th centuries, the upper portion of the castle reflects the stately Gothic forms that were prominent in later centuries,’ the company states.

It is currently painted in traditional colors of gray, blue and gold.

The Cinderella Castle is one of the two main castles that features at the beginning of every Disney movie, the other being the older Sleeping Beauty Castle. A replica of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle was first built in Disneyland in 1955.

Work on the 189-foot castle will begin in the coming weeks and continue throughout the summer. Activities around the castle such as ‘Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire’, which takes place in front of the castle, and the ‘Happily Ever After’ fireworks show will continue while the renovation is taking place.

Completed in July 1971, the Cinderella Castle was constructed using not a single brick.

Instead, it is made of concrete, steel, cement, plaster and fiberglass.

When conceiving the look for the castle, researchers turned to the famous palaces of Charles Perrault’s France.

Perrault was the French writer who is best known for his book of fairy tales collected more than 300 years ago, including the original story of ‘Cinderella’ (‘The Glass Slipper’).

Their design took the form of a romanticized composite of such courts as Fontainebleau, Versailles, and a dozen famed chateaux of the Loire Valley.

Within the design are 13 gargoyles which appear on the outside of the castle as well as 18 towers with corresponding spires.

The new Orlando look will see a heavy emphasis on gold trim and the walls being transformed with a rose tint.

The Cinderella Castle’s new color scheme will be similar to the recent renovation of the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland, California, which last year also refreshed its look to emphasize pink and blue.

The Sleeping Beauty Castle was shut off for four months as work was carried out on the 77-foot tall castle. In its place, a huge painting of the original structure was etched onto fabric and attacked the the scaffolding.
