Mum’s ‘impossibly simple’ trick leaves shower screen sparkling clean in 30 seconds: ‘I’ve never seen this before’
- A Queensland mum uses paper towels, boiling water, citric acid to clean glass
- The hack sees her get rid of calcium build up in just half a minute
A mum has uncovered an unconventional method for cleaning her shower – and the trick left her glass sparkling in just 30 seconds.
Cara, from Queensland, uses a mixture of paper towels, citric acid, and hot water to get rid of the calcium build up on glass surfaces in her home.
As citric acid is a mild organic acid, it is extremely effective when cleaning mineral deposits in bathrooms, toilets, and kitchens.
The mum dissolved 1/4cup of citric acid in 3/4cup of boiling water in a rectangle container.
She then laid paper towels in the mixture and stuck them onto the glass for half a minute before gently rubbing the debris off.

Citric acid can also be used for descaling, and to remove hard water stains in kettles and coffee machines.
‘Calcium build up magic!’ the mum wrote on a popular Facebook group.
‘I used citric acid – it just eats through all the build up.’
She added, ‘And it’s not harmful to the environment or yourself. A total game changer!’
The mum also revealed that the ease with which she cleaned the glass had her excited to get started on the shower.
Several mums thanked Cara for the simple trick and vowed to attempt it during their next big clean.
‘This is great, I will definitely buy some and give it a go. You could add in some hydrogen peroxide for mould cleaning!’
‘You have an awesome brain and logic to think of this – looks so amazing!’
‘This is why I use dishwashing liquid to clean my toilet, it has citric acid.’

Many were skeptical about this particular hack, and wondered if it was a situation where the glass sparkled when wet but dried with stains.
‘Did it look good when it dried?’ she asked. ‘I find that when I clean it, it looks great when it’s wet but dirty as soon as it dries.’
But Cara assured her that her glass looked just as spectacular dry.
Others were still not convinced.
‘This is very time consuming, and it would take a lot of paper towels to clean the shower,’ one mum said. ‘I could do it quicker with glass cleaner and a sponge.’
‘Dishwashing liquid, a scrub daddy, and some green steelo would do the job just as good but quicker.’
