Anil Wadhwani joins the insurer from rival Manulife Asia and worked in Hong Kong for five years.
Prudential – founded in London 175 years ago – is now focused entirely on higher-growth Asian and African markets after spinning off its UK business into M&G.
All senior management have relocated to Hong Kong, but the Pru has a listing and head office in London.
Wadhwani will present the annual results next month. These are expected to show the full impact of the prolonged lockdown in China.
The Pru is valued at £34billion. The shares have largely treaded water since the spin-offs began four years ago.
