While appearing on set, Claire oozed 1950s style in the sophisticated ensemble, which she accessorised with a pearl necklace and a pale grey clutch bag.

Claire’s character – Margaret – sported a quaffed hairstyle and a full face of make-up enhanced her porcelain complexion, which also boasted a slick of red lipstick.

While in other images she was being shielded from the sun’s rays with a large black umbrella by crew members as they filmed during the British heatwave.

Claire will star opposite Paul Bettany, 50, who will play her husband the Duke of Argyll, however he was not pictured on set that day.

The three-part drama will follow the couple’s marriage from 1951 to their subsequent divorce in 1963.

Speculation surrounding the divorce involved an explicit photograph and suggestions Margaret had consorted with more than 80 men, some of whom were cabinet ministers and members of the royal family.

In a statement, writer Sarah said: ‘Writing the story of Margaret’s life and the events leading up to and including her divorce from the Duke has been a passion project of mine since 1993 when I first heard her name.

‘I felt very strongly that she’d been punished for being a woman, for being visible, for refusing to back down, be a good girl and go quietly. This drama is my tribute to her.’

Meanwhile, WandaVision’s Paul who will play the Duke, said: ‘I’m delighted to be working with the remarkable Claire Foy to tell the fascinating and scandalous story of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll and their very complicated lives.

‘I’m also extremely happy to get the chance to once again be working with the wonderful teams at the BBC and Amazon Studios.’
