Cleaner The Big Clean Co: These are the six reasons why a deep clean is different to a general clean

This is what a ‘deep clean’ really looks like according to a professional – and the popular products worth ditching from your cupboard now

  • A professional cleaner shared the differences between a general and deep clean
  • She said deep cleans should be performed roughly every three months
  • The differences include items need more ‘dwelling’ time and more scrubbing
  • She said a deep clean will typically cost you more when done professionally
  • Kacie explained popular cleaning products aren’t needed; you need dish soap

A professional cleaner has lifted the lid on the differences between a deep clean and a general clean, and revealed the popular products you don’t really need.

Kacie, who runs The Big Clean Co in Melbourne, said a deep clean should be performed every three months to keep your home neat and free of dirt and grime.

A deep clean involves doing the cleaning tasks you don’t typically think to do.

‘Here are the six ways a deep clean is different to a general or maintenance clean, and why it costs more if you do it professionally,’ Kacie said in a TikTok video.

‘When we do a deep clean, we use a lot more products and we wear our tools out faster.’

Similarly to this, when a deep clean is taking place, surfaces need more ‘dwell time’ – which means time with the cleaning products sitting on them and marinating.

Kacie said they also need more ‘agitation’, which is ‘scrubbing and ‘rubbing’ to get rid of stubborn marks and stains.

Kacie added that in a deep clean, a cleaner will also usually get access to an area that isn't typically cleaned, say underneath your fridge or freezer (pictured)

‘Mop water has to be changed multiple times while mopping the floor,’ she said.

Normal deep cleaning tasks include cleaning soap scum and scale from the shower head, cleaning underneath and behind items like the fridge and dusting the doors.

Other things you might expect in a professional deep clean are a steam clean of the rugs or carpet, a deep clean of the blinds or curtains and a clean of the windows and window frames.

Instead, she said a simple and good dish washing detergent can be used in a myriad of ways in your house.

‘You know you don’t need any of this right?’ Kacie posted alongside a video.

‘And the thing is, they’re all owned by the same few giant companies just literally cleaning up with all this unnecessary plastic and suspicious chemicals.’

She added: ‘Before I really understood how to clean, I too had a house full of these.’

Instead, she said, dish soap is a ‘far better cleaner’ as it’s designed to tackle hard water stains, grime and all sorts of scum and buildup.

Kacie’s cleaning secrets revealed

* Use a non-scratch sponge with Gumption or Bar Keepers Friend to clean soap scum from a shower screen with ease.

* Always use a squeegee to remove water and then ‘polish’ or dry the glass with a microfibre cloth for sparkling results.

* For sparkling windows use the $37 Sabco window cleaning kit from Bunnings that comes with a 12.5 litre bucket with a lid and handle. Pair it with a microfibre window washer, stainless steel squeegee and a microfibre cloth for the perfect finish.

* Dishwashing liquid and water works very well to clean windows.

* The #1 Kmart product for cleaning is the two piece pack of microfibre glass cleaning cloths – they are hidden in the car section.
