Clint Stanaway’s trial by fire: Karl Stefanovic’s Today fill-in looks anxious as he’s forced to deal with a huge spider on set

Clint Stanaway did not have the easiest day at the office during Friday’s episode of Channel Nine’s Today show.

Stanaway, who is filling in on the breakfast program while regular host Karl Stefanovic is on vacation, was forced to deal with a huge spider on set.

And the 41-year-old did not look too happy about coming ‘face-to-face’  with the creepy-crawly ‘guest’.

The spider, called Hercules, was being featured on the show as part of a segment about the Australian Reptile Park on the NSW Central Coast.

To make matters worse, Stanaway featured in a joke meme posted to Today’s social media making fun of his anxious close encounter with the huge black spider.

Stanaway is seen staring uneasily at the spider, which was only centimetres away from him, alongside fill-in co-host Jayne Azzopardi.

‘When you thought you were gonna have a chill day at work,’ the caption read.

Today also posted a video featuring the spider with the caption: ‘Meet Hercules our creepiest crawliest guest yet.’

It comes after Stanaway and Azzopardi played essential roles in a major Weekend Today makeover, which was launched last year.

In April, the pair were announced as new hosts for the weekend edition of Nine’s flagship morning show.

Meanwhile, Sophie Walsh was announced as newsreader and Dan Anstey as weather presenter.

The new team replaces recent hosts Richard Wilkins, Belinda Russell and Charles Croucher.

‘I’m a sports veteran, Jayne’s all about politics and I love Sophie’s cheek and humour,’ Stanaway said in a statement at the time.

‘And we’re all from different parts of the country. I’m unashamedly a Melbourne guy, Jayne’s from the Sydney shire and Sophie’s a Queenslander at heart and I love that about us. And I think that’s really showcased on our show.’

He added: ‘We’ve known each other for a long time as colleagues.’

Stanaway began his career at his career at Nine in 2005, before moving to London in 2007 to work as a European correspondent.

He worked in news before moving to sport.

Meanwhile, Azzopardi started at Nine in 2009 as a political journalist in Canberra, before joining the Sydney newsroom in 2011. She has also previously been a newsreader for Weekend Today.
