Drug mule ‘Cocaine Cassie’ takes to Instagram from her jail cell in Colombia to post touching message on Mother’s Day – and hints she could be free NEXT year

  • Cassandra Sainsbury posted a touching Mother’s Day message from Colombia
  • Sainsbury was sentenced to serve a six-year jail sentence for drug smuggling
  • She has hinted at a having a same-sex lover behind bars, moving on from fiancé

Convicted drug smuggler Cassie Sainsbury has posted a touching Mother’s Day message online from her prison cell in Colombia, hinting that she could be free as early as next year.

‘Happy Mothers’ Day to all the mums out there. The most important woman in our lives is our mother. And this is the last year I am away from mine,’ the message posted in Spanish on her Instagram reads.

The then 22-year-old was sentenced in November 2017 to six years behind bars after working out a plea deal but, with good behaviour, this could be reduced to three years – which would see her out in 2020.

The sentence could also potentially be commuted with her serving the remainder in home detention in Bogota.

It appears Sainsbury has patched things up with her mother after a public feud in which she claimed she was trying to make money by selling her story without permission.

She had previously revealed she was having a difficult time in prison with other prisoners targeting her and referring to her as a ‘gringo.’

She recently spent her second Christmas in jail and hinted to the media she may have started a relationship with another prisoner.

Sainsbury’s first Christmas in jail was marked by fellow inmates holding up signs saying ‘Cassandra asks freedom immediately’ and claims she was being targeted and bullied.

El Buen Pastor jail is Bogota’s largest female prison.

Sainsbury – who became known as ‘Cocaine Cassie’ – last month hinted she has taken a same-sex lover while behind bars.

Speaking from her Colombian prison cell, Sainsbury told New Idea her romance was ‘something that’s just starting’.

Sainsbury also opened up about teaching English to both inmates and prison guards and her friendships with rumoured drug dealers.

She revealed details about her first few months in prison, telling the publication she initially struggled with the food but has since adapted to life behind bars – and even made friends.

‘I have a friend called Gina, the other one is Margary and the other one is Stella. I think Gina is in prison for selling drugs,’ Sainsbury said.

‘I’ve met a lot of people that are here for murdering several people or terrorist attacks. Basically, I keep my distance from them.’

Sainsbury broke-up with former fiancé Scott Broadbridge after she was sentenced but they continued to pretend they were together until April.

The February break-up came just months after the couple revealed they would be having a ‘lavish’ prison wedding – and that Mr Broadbridge would ‘be there til the end’.

She told KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O show the couple ‘kept their break-up very quiet’ for months – giving the illusion they were still together.

‘For quite some time things just weren’t good between us. From the moment I got in here the relationship was doomed,’ she said.

Sainsbury has always maintained her innocence.

She previously claimed she was unable to remember the password to her phone, which she claimed contained vital evidence in relation to her case.

Sainsbury could be released as early as 2020, with good behaviour and time served, if early release is approved by a Colombian judge.
