Cody Simpson slammed with brutal back-handed compliments after AFL Grand Final national anthem performance: ‘Thought he was a swimmer?’

Champion swimmer-turned-singer Cody Simpson has been subjected to some brutal back handed compliments, following his performance at the AFL Grand Final on Saturday.

The Gold Coast-born crooner, 27, wowed the crowd at Melbourne’s MCG as he took to the stage to belt out a heartfelt rendition of Australia’s National Anthem.

Cody cut a dashing figure in a tailored black suit as he poured his heart and soul into the performance, and had the crowd in the palm of his hand.

Many AFL fans quickly took to social media to pay a cheeky backhanded compliment to the former swimmer, who earlier this year failed to quality for the Paris Olympics, joking he was a much better singer than athlete.

‘That swimmer just crushed the anthem. Cody Simpson should go on a talent show or something,’ joked one viewer.

‘I thought Cody was a swimmer?’ a second person added.

‘Swimmers take over the ‘G this year. Cody singing the anthem,’ a third user chipped in and a fourth added: ‘Swimming’s loss is music’s gain.’

Cody rose to fame in 2009 as a preteen after uploading clips of him singing to YouTube, which helped launch his musical career.

He later became a professional swimmer in 2019 and won a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

After failing to quality for this year’s Olympic Games, Cody is once again focusing on his music career.

It comes after AFL fans praised Australian singer Christine Anu and her daughter Zipporah’s heartfelt rendition of Island Home at the AFL Grand Final.

Christine, 54, and her daughter Zipporah, 22, wowed 100,000 fans at the MCG when they performed a breathtaking rendition of the singer’s 1995 ode to life in Australia.

The Cairns-born singer and her daughter, who she shares with Aussie actor Rodger Corser, exuded confidence and style as they belted out the hit to a stunned crowd.

Gobsmacked viewers quickly took to social media to praise the incredible performance – with many claiming Zipporah was even better than her famous mother.

Many also questioned why the talented duo were not the headlining act rather than Katy Perry as they criticised AFL bosses for not using a local main performer.
