Coles launch another two hot cross bun flavours – after sparking ridicule with its last ‘monstrosity’
- Coles has shocked customers with another new hot cross bun release
- The retailer is selling red velvet and carrot cake filled flavours
Coles has no plans to reduce its unconventional range of hot cross bun flavours despite the bizarre ‘special burger sauce’ treats sparking outrage this week.
Two new ‘filled’ buns hit shelves across Australia this morning – red velvet and carrot cake – which the store claims are the first of their kind Down Under.
Far from the more controversial savoury options, the new treats cost $6 for four and are each topped with cream cheese frosting.
While the more tame options have won over sweet fanatics, others are begging the supermarket to return to more traditional options and ‘stop meddling with a good thing’.
‘How can they even call it a bun? It’s disgraceful what they are doing to the traditional hot cross bun. Why can’t they have these flavours all year round and just call them buns or bread rolls. A hot cross bun is a fruit bun,’ one wrote.
‘That right there is a perfect example of just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should,’ another added.

Foodies are still reeling after the release of the Special Burger Sauce flavoured bun that was dubbed a ‘monstrosity’ – despite some claiming their ‘foodie dreams had come true’.
The savoury bun – infused with the sauce – is filled with diced pickles and finished off with a layer of tasty cheese on top.
The retailer says the hot cross bun makes a great base for your burger or savoury snack, but shoppers are not convinced.
‘Okay who was high when they come up with this one?’ A shopper wrote under a snap of the new offering.

‘What the…? This is not a joke… ok people, we really don’t know how to feel about this latest Hot Cross Bun creation.’
‘We need to leave this world behind,’ one woman said.
‘All the flavours they could do and they choose that monstrosity?’ another asked.
‘Someone owes me a new phone because I just threw up all over it,’ another wrote.

Other shoppers loved the idea.
‘Oh come on people- like you’ve never had a cheesy bun! it’s just a savoury bun like cheese and bacon buns. I’d try it for sure! another agreed.
The store has a long line of controversial launches, including last years Vegemite and cheese option.

Coles General Manager for Bakery Kate Roff said Coles is always looking for new ways to ‘excite customers’ with innovative products.
‘Each year we try to tap into new flavour trends to give customers a fun, modern twist on a hot cross bun, such as our new Coles Special Burger Sauce Hot Cross Buns,’ she said.
‘Based on the phenomenal success of our limited edition Vegemite hot cross buns, savoury hot cross buns are the new craze.’
‘We will always have our traditional fruit and chocolate varieties, but it’s important to differentiate and offer customers who prefer savoury options a new and exciting hot cross bun too, which is why we think the Vegemite buns were such a hit.’
The manager said the bakery team have ‘spent months’ fine-tuning and taste-testing the new hot cross buns.
