A Coles delivery driver was forced to hide inside his truck after a knife-wielding motorist started erratically stabbing his window in a road rage attack in Melbourne.

Chilling footage captured by motorists shows the terrifying incident unfolding at a set of traffic lights on the corner of Swan and Church Streets in Richmond around 11am on Monday.

The Coles worker was walking towards his truck when a man in a black hoodie jumped out of car with a knife and began berating him, 7News reports.

He then removed the weapon from a sheath and started storming towards the supermarket worker who leap into the safety of his driver seat.

The truck driver just managed to slam the door shut before the motorist started pounding his blade into the driver’s side window.  

It remains unclear what sparked the altercation. 

Police are investigating the incident and have urged any witnesses with dashcam footage to come forward. 

A Coles spokesperson said the driver in the footage was not injured during the attack.
