- The banner had a secondary message reading: ‘Kane the fun police’
Collingwood has returned fire at Port Adelaide legend and media personality Kane Cornes through their game-day banner for their clash with the Adelaide Crows.
Cornes lashed Collingwood young gun Jack Ginnivan for over-the-top celebrations after the Pies’ round one win over St Kilda, with the 19-year-old being handed a camera by the club and then filming himself celebrating with teammates and labelling the victory ‘light work’.
Collingwood returned fire with a hidden message in their banner on Saturday afternoon at the MCG.
The banner unveiled before the match between Collingwood and Adelaide took aim at Kane Cornes and his comments during the week about Pies youngster Jack Ginnivan
Collingwood players prepare for the round two clash with the banner in the background that had the secret message ‘Kane the fun police’
At first glance, the banner bore the innocuous words: ‘Black and white stripes on the ‘G looking nice, flying around the Crows, powerful, quick, precise’.
However, several letters were displaced, creating a secondary message that read: ‘Kane the fun police’.
Ginnvan celebrated enthusiastically after the Pies beat St Kilda in round one, including breaking out a camera to record his celebrations.
Cornes didn’t hold back with his criticism of Ginnivan following their round one clash,
‘They finished 17th last year. You’ve beaten St Kilda, who no one expects will do anything this year, stop carrying on,’ he said last weekend.
‘That’s Jack Ginnivan, you’ve played six games. Just relax. Earn some respect in the game before you go on carrying on like that.
‘If I’m (Adelaide coach) Matthew Nicks, I’m playing Collingwood next week and I’m showing that vision going, ‘who do these guys think they are?’
‘You don’t see Geelong carrying on like that. You don’t see Richmond and dynasty teams carry on like that. Earn some respect before you start carrying on like that, saying it was ‘light work’ and ‘the first of many’. There’s a thing about winning in a humble way.’
Cornes was not impressed with Ginnivan’s antics and said he should tone things down in the future.
Former Collingwood player and coach Nathan Buckley also lined up Cornes during the week and said he ‘loved the personality’ shown by Ginnivan.
‘Kane’s got a segment he needs to fill so he’s got to find something that he’s not happy about,’ Buckley said on SEN Breakfast during the week.
‘The volcano needs to happen apparently.’
If the attention had impacted Ginnivan, it only served to fire him up. He had 21 disposals, a goal and multiple score involvements at halftime in the Pies booming 42-point win over the Crows.
