Company ThirdLove creates bras for asymmetrical breasts

An underwear brand has launched a new type of bra specifically catered to those with asymmetrical breasts.

ThirdLove, a company based in San Francisco, wanted to cater to the many people whose boobs each fit a different cup size.

About 90 per cent of women have different-sized breasts, a British survey found previously. But while some women barely notice the asymmetry, 40 per cent of them have a boob that is one or two sizes larger than the other, making it hard to find bras that fit perfectly.

In order to address the problem, ThirdLove created its Classic Contour Plunge bra with removable padding, which allows customers to add extra foam pads on the side that needs it.

Customers are meant to buy the larger size, and use one or two inserts on the side of their smaller breast, so that both cups will be filled.

‘We’re focused on giving women their best possible fit — and since no other brands were addressing asymmetry, we thought it was the perfect opportunity for us to step in and help,’ head of design Ra’el Cohen told Seventeen.com.

‘[The bra] was designed with removable memory foam inserts that allow you to even out your shape.

‘You can add in the pad on the smaller side, or if you have even more asymmetry, you can double up and wear two pads on the smaller side to even out your breasts.’

People can also use a questionnaire on ThirdLove’s website to find their perfect fit and type of bra.

They are prompted to pick the breast shape that most resembles theirs (one of the options is ‘asymmetric’).

Customers then indicate their height, tell the website what size they’re currently wearing, and signal any fit issue they are currently experiencing.

After answering several questions, they ultimately land on a page where ThirdLove recommends a specific type and size of bra, based on the needs they have expressed.
