Conor Gallagher ‘will stay at Chelsea’ amid deadline day interest from Premier League clubs

Conor Gallagher ‘will stay at Chelsea’ despite interest from several Premier League clubs in sealing a deadline day loan deal for the England midfielder

Conor Gallagher ‘is set to remain a Chelsea player’ despite significant interest from Newcastle United, Everton, Crystal Palace and others.

Chelsea are unwilling to loan England international Gallagher to direct competitors such as Newcastle and offers to sign him permanently have fallen well below their valuation.

The Athletic report there is little appetite at Stamford Bridge in loaning the 22-year-old out to anyone and he will stay at Chelsea barring a twist late on deadline day.

Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and West Ham have all been interested in Gallagher but Chelsea have so far rebuffed all approaches.

Gallagher enjoyed a positive loan spell at Palace last season and there was hope at Selhurst Park he could return when Chelsea said they wouldn’t loan him to a direct rival.

Gallagher was arguably Palace’s best player last season during his loan spell at the club, and had looked set for a more regular role at Chelsea this term.

However, he has struggled for regular minutes under Graham Potter, and averages just 41 minutes per appearance from his 18 Premier League outings.

The 22-year-old has scored just once for the Blues this term, a long-range effort that came against the Eagles in a 14-minute cameo back in October.

Nonetheless, Potter and owner Todd Boehly view Gallagher as a key player going forward and don’t wish to see him loaned out for the rest of the season.

Potter’s side are also in a protracted move to bring Benfica’s World Cup winning star Enzo Fernandez to Stamford Bridge, which would create even greater competition for minutes at the club.

Fernandez’s deal to Chelsea has continued over almost four weeks, and given the £105million fee that the club will need to fork out for the young Argentine, it is likely that he will come straight into the first team.

Chelsea have agreed a £12m fee with London rivals Arsenal for Jorginho as they clear the decks in midfield.

Gallagher thrived under Vieira with his seemingly incessant energy bringing drive and tempo to the Eagles’ midfield.

The 22-year-old scored eight goals and assisted a further three in 34 league games in a successful loan spell that saw him impress Gareth Southgate enough to earn his first England call-up in November 2021.
