Police are investigating the suspicious death of a woman whose body was found by a neighbour mowing her yard.

The neighbour found the woman’s body laying uncovered in the grass in Cooktown, Far North Queensland, around 5pm on Monday afternoon.

Officers believe the 38-year-old most likely died on Sunday evening.

Detective Inspector Jason Chetham said the Bradbury Street properties were a continuation of one another, and there was no fence between them.

‘We’re trying to narrow it down now to a firmer time and date,’ Insp Chetham said.

He said officers had been called to an area near the woman’s address on Sunday night after reports of a disturbance including yelling and loud arguments.

It’s not known if there is a connection.

‘It is a sudden death and we still don’t know the full circumstances at this point in time.’

‘We have put all of our specialist resources into it in an effort to determine exactly what happened’, Det-Insp Chetham added.

Police want to speak with a number of people in relation to the death, some of whom are not in Cooktown.

Police were called to the area the day before the woman's body was found with reports of an argument, but it is not known whether the two incidents are connected

‘There is one person we want to speak to, a potential witness, who is at sea, and that will be completed today hopefully,’ Det Insp Chetham told reporters on Friday.

The woman’s partner is among the people police are speaking to.

On Thursday detectives from the Cooktown Criminal Investigation Branch were at the Bradbury St property.

Police are calling for any information about how the woman may have died or any footage that may exist from the area around the time in question.
