A small town in central NSW is taking extreme measures not to waste a single drop of water as its supplies slowly dwindle to nothing.

The 3,000 residents who live in Coonabarabran, in central NSW, are unable to wash their cars of water their gardens, 9 News reported.

Things have gotten so bad in the town that some crafty locals have moved their washing machines outside so they can water their garden at the same time.

The drastic moves came after the local council imposed the highest possible water restriction in April.

The town relies on the small Timor Dam  (pictured) and it slowly faces a critical shortage in water as last week the capacity dropped below 23 per cent.

The town relies on the small Timor Dam, and is slowly facing a critical shortage in water after the capacity dropped below 23 per cent last week.

Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor Peter Shinton said a certain percentage of the water at the bottom of the damn would be unusable.

This is because organic materials accumulate at the bottom of the dam and over time it will pollute the water. The polluted water will be untreatable.

‘Right now we are not using dam water at all. We are taking water out of the river, and from the four existing bores that are pretty low suppliers,’ Cr Shinton said.

Cr Shinton says the town will be under level 6 water restriction until the dam reaches 50 per cent capacity.

The NSW government has put forward $1million in funding for seven emergency bores to be put up. One of which is expected in use by end of next week.

Cr Shinton says the first bore will help increase Coonabarabran’s water supply.
