An ice addict and drunk father-to-be who ran over and killed an off-duty police officer moments after filming himself driving at 200km/h has been jailed for 10 years.

Jesse Reid, 23, was speeding, was high on ice, had drunk alcohol and had taken prescription drugs before he collided with policeman Victor Kostiuk in September last year.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kostiuk, 59, was taking part in a charity motorcycle ride in Orbost near East Gippsland, Victoria, when he was run down by Reid’s Holden Commodore.

The fundraiser was for the families of officers who died while serving on the force.

Reid pleaded guilty earlier this month, and the court heard at that hearing that he was travelling to Melbourne at the time of the crash because his girlfriend there had gone into labour,

A friend blew an interlock system on the car for him so it would start.

A social media video taken by Reid moments before the crash showed him saying: ‘When you’re too f**ked to drive and you’ve got a baby due.’

Video also showed Reid overtaking cars on the opposite of the road.

Reid was speeding at 137km/h when he rammed into Detective Kostiuk, who was with his son Felix Kostiuk, and several other officers.

Detective Kostiuk died at the scene after attempts of reviving him by other officers.

County Court Judge Trevor Wraight said Reid had shown ‘a complete lack of regard’ for other people’s safety, the ABC reported.

Reid will be eligible for parole in seven years.
