Freda tries to muster up the words to say that he has died before saying: ‘Norris passed away just a short while ago.’

The plot thickens as it is revealed that before to his hospitalisation, Norris had some important news he wanted to share with Ken and Rita.

The soap decided to kill off the character after Malcolm Hebden, 81, chose to leave the show after 27 years.

The storyline concludes with Norris’ pals raising a toast to their friend in the Rovers.

Speculation first surfaced that he was leaving after Norris’ former on-screen wife Mary Taylor (Patti Clare), Ken Barlow (Bill Roache) and Claudia Colby (Rula Lenska) were all seen shooting funeral scenes.

Back in January,  Malcolm revealed he quietly retired from the soap in the role of busybody Norris.

The actor decided to leave the show following a near fatal heart attack in 2017, and it was written into the show that he had left for a care home and has only made a few cameo appearances since.

He told The Sun at the time: ‘I absolutely adored playing Norris and I was pleased to be able to return briefly after my operation.

‘It took a great deal of courage to make the decision to retire. But I had come to realise that although the mind was willing the body was not so much.’

Corrie boss Ian MacLeod added: ‘Norris became an all-time great character, whose lemon-lipped barbs will be remembered forever.

‘But, in his brilliant double acts with Emily, Rita and more recently Mary, Malcolm has left us with countless fantastic memories.’
