Coronavirus Australia: Queensland records more new Covid cases than Victoria and NSW

Queensland records more new Covid cases than Victoria AND NSW with 7,311 but straight-talking top doctor declares a ‘catastrophic’ hospital situation has been avoided

Queensland has recorded another Covid-19 spike to record more cases than NSW or Victoria.

The Sunshine State recorded 7311 new cases and four deaths on Sunday, more than double the 3660 infections reported 24 hours earlier.

The spike comes on the same day Victoria recorded 7223 cases while NSW had 6686 new infections.

But Queensland chief health officer John Gerrard is hopeful the worst of the outbreak is over and that a ‘catastrophic’ situation has been avoided.

He says hospitalisation rates were lower than government predictions and have not exceeded above 1,000 due to the state’s high vaccination rate, with than 90 per cent of eligible residents doubled-vaxxed.

Hospitalised cases in the public health system have halved from a peak of 928 19 days ago to 462 recorded on Sunday.

‘This is taking a really positive turn,’ Dr Garrard told reporters on Sunday.

‘Clearly we’re well on track to coming to the end of this wave.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk added.’That’s still a lot of people but it’s coming down which means we’re coming off the wave.’

Three of the four new deaths were in aged care, a day after Queensland reported the loss of 13 lives.
